PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - Cambodian leader Hun Sen declared war on Tuesday on pornographic publications, saying they are hurting education and culture in the predominantly Buddhist country.
Hun Sen said he was shocked to find that pornographic magazines were being printed in Cambodia - and were even sold close to his home - and ordered officials to stop their distribution.
"This is a profoundly dangerous matter. Because of such a thing, students cannot progress in their studies," Hun Sen told a graduation ceremony for teachers. He also blamed pornography for behaviour leading to the spread of AIDS among young people.
He scolded Cambodia's culture and information ministries for failing to rein in pornographic publications.
"Their licences must be revoked, if that needs to be done. Take them to court, if there is such a need. This is a very hot issue for us," he said.
The audience of several hundred graduates laughed when Hun Sen held up copies of several sex magazines and explained he was late after studying them to add last-minute remarks to his prepared speech.
Khieu Kanharith, who as information minister oversees the licencing of media in Cambodia, said after the speech he was preparing orders to shut the magazines down.
Cambodia is predominantly Buddhist and socially conservative. People normally do not talk about sex openly.
"All lessons about sex should be confined to the household only and must not be discussed in commercial publications," Hun Sen said.
